    TESTIMONIALS

Over the past two decades as an educator I have had the opportunity to meet numerous educational leaders who are committed to service, advocacy, and developing systems that meet the needs of all students, and Naomi Khalil remains in a class of her own.  Naomi skillfully works to enhance teaching and learning through the prism of representation and diversity in thought and perspectives.  Naomi tirelessly works to lift the voices of those who are often mired by systems that predictably relegate underrepresented groups into the margins of education and does so without being compromised.  As a facilitator I’ve been a part of training led by Naomi that have produced tangible outcomes resulting in shifts in practices and policy. Wherever Naomi goes – systems improve.  We all should be so fortunate to have worked with Naomi.

I have had the great privilege of working with and learning from Naomi over the last four years. We collaborated on bringing equity driven civics programming to students across Detroit Public Schools Community District. She led with grace, kindness, and data. Her thoughtful, action-oriented approach was respected by her peers, her team, district and school leaders alike. She understood how to navigate bureaucracy at the district level, gain buy-in at the school level, and get all stakeholders to “Yes”. Rare among leaders, she never asked anyone to do something she has not done herself and her actions always spoke louder than words. She always led with the question…”Is this good for kids?” and “Is this fair?” Beyond the pride I take in our working partnership, I am proud to call her a friend.

    Naomi is a truth teller.

    Naomi is a change agent.

Naomi is an expert in the tenets of diversity, equity, justice, AND liberation.

Whenever I’ve trained with Naomi, I’ve been challenged in real and critical ways that haven’t always felt comortable in the moment. True growth often involves some degree of discomfort and ultimately, that discomfort pays off.  This is certainly the case with me.  Naomi has led me to reexamine my thinking, my being, and the ways that I too have been complicit in systems of oppression.  Days, months, and even years after training, I continue to reflect on my learning.  I continue to hear Naomi’s words in my head, and I continue to grow with them.

I am a better educator, facilitator, and human being because of Naomi.
